Arrival & Transport

Your Pinpoint on the Imperial Square

You are at the absolute heart of three empires. The Blue Mosque stands majestically on the ancient Hippodrome, directly facing its eternal rival, Hagia Sophia. With Topkapi Palace just a stone’s throw away, your journey into history begins from this very pinpoint. Use the map below to orient your imperial march.

How to Get to Sultanahmet Square: All Options at a Glance

Arriving at the heart of the Old City is an experience in itself. Public transport is not only the most practical way to reach the Blue Mosque, avoiding the peninsula's notorious traffic, but also the most scenic.

The historic tramway is your direct chariot to the Imperial Square.

By Tram (Recommended)

For the most direct and awe-inspiring approach to the Blue Mosque, the T1 Kabataş-Bağcılar tram line is your definitive choice. The journey itself is a tour through history.

  • From Taksim Square / Kabataş: Take the T1 tram in the direction of Bağcılar. Alight at the Sultanahmet station. The mosque will be majestically awaiting you on your right.

  • From the Grand Bazaar / Beyazıt: Take the T1 tram in the direction of Kabataş. Alight at the Sultanahmet station. The mosque will be directly in front of you.

  • Travel Time: Approx. 15 minutes from Kabataş; Approx. 5 minutes from the Grand Bazaar.

• Tip

As you alight from the tram at Sultanahmet station, take a moment. You are now standing on the ancient Roman Hippodrome, with the Blue Mosque on one side and Hagia Sophia on the other. You have arrived at the center of the world.

By Bus (Not Recommended)

Numerous public bus (IETT) lines have stops at or near the Sultanahmet Square bus hub, placing you at the heart of the historic peninsula.

  • Main Stops: Look for the “Sultanahmet Meydanı” or “Çatladıkapı” bus stops.
  • Key Routes: Many buses arriving from Eminönü, Beyazıt, and Yenikapı will pass through the area. Check your map application for the most convenient route from your location.

By Metro

The Metro is a fast way to reach the historical peninsula, but it does not take you directly to the Blue Mosque. You will need to make a final connection via the tram.

  • Closest Station: The nearest Metro station is Vezneciler on the M2 line.

  • Connection: After alighting at Vezneciler station, follow the signs for a short walk to the Laleli-Üniversite tram stop. From there, take the T1 tram in the direction of Kabataş for three stops to reach Sultanahmet.

.

• Good to Know

The M2 Metro line is your lifeline if you are staying near Taksim Square or the northern business districts. Think of the tram as the final, scenic bridge connecting the modern city’s speed to the Old City’s timeless splendor.

By Train (Marmaray)

For visitors arriving from the Asian side or connecting from Sabiha Gökçen Airport (via the M4 metro line), the Marmaray train line is your most efficient option.

  • Closest Station: Take the Marmaray to Sirkeci Station.
  • Connection: From Sirkeci, it is a pleasant 10-minute walk through the historical streets to Sultanahmet Square. Alternatively, you can take the T1 tram from the Sirkeci stop (opposite the station) for one stop to Sultanahmet.
  •

• Why Choose Marmaray?

This is the ultimate choice if you are traveling from Üsküdar or Kadıköy. The Marmaray offers a swift and spectacular underwater journey beneath the Bosphorus, delivering you directly into the heart of the old imperial capital.

Travel Card: To use any public transport in Istanbul, you will need an Istanbulkart. You can purchase and top up this card from the yellow vending machines located at every station.

The City's Chariot: Taxi & Ride-Sharing

Taxis offer a direct route to the Imperial Square, especially convenient if you are traveling with luggage or in a small group. You can easily hail a yellow taxi on the street or use popular ride-sharing apps like BiTaksi.

A word of counsel: traffic in the historic peninsula can be formidable, especially during peak hours. Always confirm the driver will use the taximeter or agree on a price beforehand for your journey.
